Good Neighbor Health Clinic provides free comprehensive dental and medical assistance, as well as mentoring for aspiring health care professionals. The executive director approached Jill Marshall Consulting in 2019 to recommend ways for the organization to fuel the sustainability of Good Neighbor’s operations by diversifying its fundraising strategy, and we collaborated on several priorities. When a new executive director was hired in 2023, several board members approached me to support her transition into Good Neighbor, and I was thrilled to assist.

Elevating Grant Writing Strategy
Hiring Fundraising Staff | Case for Support | Grant Writing and Prospecting
Good Neighbor hired me to design a process for the organization to hire a grant writer. I also participated in the search. In addition, I identified several new grant opportunities, recommended new donor messaging, offered counsel on systematic relationship building with grantmakers, and improved relevant organizational operations. After two months, I delivered a 15-page report and additional resources to maximize Good Neighbor’s connections with funding prospects.
Improving Major Gifts Program

Good Neighbor retained my services to evaluate its major gifts program and provide recommendations to increase major donor engagement. I offered strategic support and tools to define the organization’s major gifts portfolio and identify additional major donor prospects. A tailored stewardship plan for each prospective donor was developed in collaboration with the executive director, including opportunities for Good Neighbor board member engagement. In addition, we worked together to develop the organization’s first planned giving program.
Supporting a Successful Transition

When a new executive director joined Good Neighbor, I coached her through her transition into the organization. In addition to helping her prioritize her first six months, I provided counsel for immediate next steps to enhance Good Neighbor’s fundraising and communications, including best practice integration and content development for the annual report and end-of-year appeals. As the primary liaison with the graphic designer and printing house, I ensured on-time and compelling messaging. When the executive director needed additional assistance to address a public relations opportunity, I provided guidance with messaging and stakeholder engagement.
Results
Good Neighbor’s investment in strengthening its donor outreach has diversified its revenue and increased giving from multiple individuals and organizations. Staff and board members have engaged in additional best practices to improve donor outreach. The new executive director has had hands-on assistance to maintain Good Neighbor’s financial sustainability and an advisor to support her strategic vision.
